"Training a Fool is Not a Joke (2011) is a looped film that takes inspiration from Rodney Graham's Vexation Island (1997). Set in the back yard of a South Vancouver home that is slated for demolition, Lye performs as an apprentice tree pruner who has been hired to remove a large dead branch from a tree. However, the inexperienced arborist is put at risk when the task at hand goes awry. These follies of the everyday point to the adverse effects of Vancouver real estate speculation, while evoking the pitfalls associated with the act of re-performance itself." - Jesse Birch
All equipment for this film was rented from Cineworks Independent Filmmakers Society in Vancouver BC. Their rates make independent production possible. Check them out here
Screened in the windows of Satellite Gallery from September 9th until October 22nd, 2011 as part of Re-Live Vancouver.
